THE JEWISH FUNERAL
Our guiding principle is KAVOD LAMET - Honor for the Deceased
The basic requirements of a Jewish funeral are:
SHMIRA - As a show of respect the deceased is not left alone from the time of death to the burial. The primary role of the Shomer is to offer comfort to the soul through the recitation of Tehillim (Psalms). We encourage family and friends to participate in Shmira. The Chesed Shel Emes will provide a Shomer at a familys request and expense.
TAHARA - The ritual washing, purification and dressing of the deceased with reverence and care, by the Chevra Kadisha (Holy Society). Men prepare men and women prepare women in accordance with Orthodox tradition.
TACHRICHIM - The traditional white burial shroud represents priestly garments worn in times of the Temple. The set includes head covering, shirt, pants, jacket or kittel, belt and a wrapping sheet. Men are also wrapped in the Tallit they wore during their lives.
ARON - The simple wooden casket with no metal components is in keeping with the Biblical teaching "For dust thou art and to the dust thou shalt return." (Genesis 3:19). Earth from Israel in a small cloth bag is placed under the head of the deceased to symbolize our spiritual return to the Holy Land.
KVURAH BAKARKA - In ground burial is required by Jewish law. Accompanying the deceased and filling in the grave is a religious privilege and is an expression of honor to the deceased.
